Equipment

  • 1 square baking dish 8x8

Ingredients

Crisp filling ingredients

  • 4 apples Pink Lady or Granny Smith, sliced about 4 cups
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free baking flour
  • 1-2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon liquid honey
  • 1 lemon for juice, about 2 Tbsp

Oat Crisp Topping ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter unsalted, thinly sliced
  • 1 ¼ cup gluten-free rolled oats not quick cooking
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Toss sliced apples in flour, cinnamon and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  • Place apples into a square baking dish (8 x 8 inches).
  • In the same bowl, add the sliced butter, oats, brown sugar, salt and cinnamon.
  • Using 2 knifes "cut" through the mixture, combining the ingredients together until it becomes a crumbly texture. Add walnuts and stir.
  • Add the oat crisp topping overtop the apples, pressing down gently.
  • Bake for 30 - 35 minutes in the oven or until the crisp is hot throughout.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

Note on cooking time: 30 minute at 350 degrees F will give you an apple crisp that has apple with some structure still - slightly firm. If you prefer your apples softer, bake the crisp longer.
Serve with ice cream (dessert) or Greek yogurt (breakfast). Or vice versa, you're in charge.
Apple crisp can be prepped and stored in the fridge for up to 6 hours before baking. Do not freeze.
Leftovers good for 3 days in the fridge.
Substitutions for apple type: We like Pink Lady and Granny Smith because they both hold up to baking and the taste with the brown sugar topping is a perfect balance of sweet and tart.
