This recipe for mango salsa I created after many long hours researching online, painstaking recipe development and tons of trial and error.
Totally kidding!
I got it from a chip bag.
My favourite chips lately are these Canadian (woot woot!) Organic Que Pasa Tortilla Chips - the Twist of Lime are really good.
Jump to:
And not only do these chips taste really good, they all have a recipe on the side of them.
For this mango salsa recipe, I made a few tweaks to the original on the chip bag.
The results are nothing short of fresh and delicious every time I make it!
Here's what you'll need to make the salsa:
- Frozen mango chunks - these are my favourite from President's Choice.
- Red bell pepper
- Jalapeno
- Red onion
- Limes
- Cilantro
- Salt
See recipe card below for quantities and instructions.
Variations
This recipe for mango salsa is perfect as is or you can think of it as a delicious "base" salsa!
You can add (or take away) any ingredient you're not a huge fan of.
Here are some other fruit-salsa ingredients that you could add to this recipe:
- Avocado
- Corn
- Cucumber
- Peaches
- Pineapple
- Tomato
- Zucchini
Ok, maybe don't add all of them!
Not sure how that would turn out...
But here's are a few of pairings that are mango-forward and use other ingredeitns. go really well together:
- Mango and peach
- Mango and corn
- Mango and black beans
- Forget the mango altogether and try this Strawberry Cucumber Salsa with Mint or this Summer Corn and Black Bean Salsa
Substitutions
Using fresh mango instead of frozen
You can totally use fresh mango for this recipe instead of frozen.
The reason I like using the frozen mango is because I don't have to wait around for the mango to be ripe before I can make this salsa!
Whenever you want it, the frozen mango is good to go (see tip before for thawing the mango chunks.)
But if you have a whole bunch of ripe mangos on your kitchen counter - first of all, lucky you!!
And secondly, cut those babies up and use them.
For this recipe, you need 2 cups of diced mango so that would take 2-3 whole mangos, depending on which variety you've got.
Omit the jalapeño
Don't like the heat?🔥 Omit the jalapeño pepper completely.
You won't get the kick of heat obviously but the sweet mango shine and the sour bite of lime will be there.
No bell peppers? No problem
If you don't have bell peppers, you can use cucumbers instead.
They'll give a similar crunch to the salsa.
What to serve with mango salsa
Mango salsa, and fruit salsas in general, are so great to have on hand because they literally go. with. everything.
Ok, maybe not every-everything, but you get my point: they're one of those highly versatile side dishes that brings such a pop of flavour and fun to the foods it's served with.
Here are some main foods to serve the mango salsa:
- Mango salsa and oven-baked or grilled salmon, like this Easy Baked Salmon with Mango Salsa
- Grilled chicken breasts - see this recipe for Cast Iron Skillet Chicken Breast that would be perfect
- Burgers baby🍔Check out this recipe for The BEST Cast Iron Skillet Burgers {EASY RECIPE}
- Shrimp - this Sweet and Spicy Shrimp brings some heat, a great pairing for sweet and cooling mango
- Pork chops - yep! Pork isn't just great with apples and applesauce. Mango (or other fruit) also bring sweetness to balance the heartiness of the pork
- Fish tacos
- Fish quesadillas - along the same line as the tacos, these Simple Haddock Quesadillas would welcome the freshness from the fruit salsa
- Grilled halloumi - like this Grilled Halloumi Salad with Tomato and Parsley
- Shrimp tacos - 'nuff said🌮
- Tuna steaks - a "meaty" protein like a tuna steak is a perfect contrast to the light and sweet salsa
Top Tips
Thaw the mango
Have you ever tried to dice frozen mango?
It freezes your fingers!🥶
Here's 2 ways around frozen digits:
- Take out the mango from the freezer the night before you want to use it and let it thaw in the fridge overnight
- Or if you want to make the salsa now and the mango is still in the freezer, no problem: you can thaw the mango chunks in the microwave. Take the mango out of the bag and place it in a glass or other microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on 30 second increments on a lower power (try not to "cook" the mango😉). Stir the mango chunks in between the warming process and stop when it's mostly thawed
Managing your jalapeño!
If you're going to be using the jalapeño pepper, those oils from the pepper can sting if they get into your eyes.
Don't touch your eyes or just avoid your face in general after cutting that jalapeño!
And wash your hands really, really well with warm water, soap and something abrasive (ie, a scrubber or something with some texture.)
Let it sit in the fridge before serving
This mango salsa gets even better as all the ingredients sit and meld together for some time.
After you put it all together, let it sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes before serving.
Make ahead tip
You can dice up all the ingredients and mix it all together up to 8 hours before serving.
Just keep the prepared salsa in the fridge, covered until you need it.
If you're putting it on hot food (like the salmon or chicken), bring it out when you start cooking the salmon on chicken.
That will let the salsa can come up to room temperature before you put it on a hot piece of salmon or chicken!
Is mango salsa healthy?
Definitely!
You've got fruit, veggies and a herb (cilantro) coming together for a refreshing side dish.
The mango gives you a hit of vitamin C, along with the peppers and red onions are a good source of antioxidants, manganese and vitamin B6!
